What inspired you to begin creating educational software products? Between 1996 and 1999, I served as Curriculum Coordinator for a new middle school. Both the administrative and instructional staff were drawn from various school sites in our district. We were fortunate to have a very brilliant and talented technology coordinator. I observed the various learning contexts she was providing, both for students and staff, and I began to see the immense potential for computer tutorials and other learning formats. I saw so much potential in these and wanted to learn more. Unfortunately, at that time, I had only a rudimentary level of computer skill, so I approached Judith and asked if she would be willing to teach me how to develop the kinds of software applications she was developing for use on our school campus. Fortunately, she agreed to do so. Have you had success using computer software programs for character education? Absolutely! Growing Up: A Character-Building Approach grew out of a series of affective health education booklets I developed for our school district. With actual application and use, as well as through ongoing observation and teacher feedback, I knew going into the redevelopment process what worked well and what did not. I focused on those aspects, updated some of the content, and added some new content. Why the emphasis on developing strong character? Because of the research I undertook before publishing Reclaiming America's Children: Raising and Educating Morally Healthy Kids I understood the strategic role that character plays in childhood development and later maturation. A number of years after the book's publication, there began to be much talk about character in educational circles, but I found the programs resulting from this to be rather superficial and, in my opinion, they often "missed the mark." Understanding not only the importance of character, but also how to guide its development in young people takes a deeper and more thorough exploration of what strong character actually looks like in human terms. The combo resource pack, which includes the Reclaiming America's Children text and workshop on video/DVD is designed to help parents and teachers understand the principles of developing strong character. Is Growing Up: A Character-Building Approach appropriate for home schools? Definitely! As a matter of fact this program is perfect for home schools. It is very user friendly, and a home school student within the recommended age can complete the modules with minimal parent supervision, although some is required. But just as for teachers or lab facilitators in schools, everything needed to get the job done is included in the package. While non-religious in nature, parents and teachers appreciate the wholesome values and sound guidance this program offers pre-adolescents. How can someone who is interested in these programs, or someone who has additional questions or concerns regarding their purchase, use, and implementation contact you? To contact us:
